Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease treatment addresses inflammation and damage in the tissues supporting the teeth. The plan depends on whether disease is limited to the gums or involves deeper support, and may combine professional treatment with ongoing maintenance.

Understanding gum support

A probe measures the space beside a tooth. The animation also illustrates how gum disease can affect the tissues that support it.

Measurements, examination and relevant X-rays guide treatment. Cleaning does not automatically replace supporting bone that has been lost.

Understanding your care

Treat the condition and maintain the support

Start with the purpose of treatment, then explore what matters for your own care.

01

Identify the extent

Bleeding or swelling needs context. The examination distinguishes inflammation limited to the gums from periodontitis, which affects the deeper structures that attach and support the teeth.

02

Choose the right level of care

Professional cleaning, scaling and root planing, or surgical treatment may be considered depending on the findings. The approach is matched to the person and affected sites.

03

Monitor over time

Periodontal care includes reassessment and maintenance, because treatment is not a one-time guarantee. Home care and relevant risk factors also influence the health of the tissues.

From questions to a plan

What care can involve.

The details and sequence depend on your assessment and individual treatment plan.

01

Measure and diagnose

The team assesses bleeding, gum position, pocket measurements, and tooth support. Medical history and relevant images help build a diagnosis rather than relying on symptoms alone.

02

Discuss the treatment plan

The clinician explains which tissues are affected and the proposed care. Some cases can begin with non-surgical treatment; others may need specialist assessment or additional procedures.

03

Reassess the response

After treatment, the gums and supporting measurements are reviewed. Areas that remain difficult to manage may call for further care or a change in approach.

04

Maintain and monitor

Follow-up focuses on deposits, tissue health, and risk factors. The interval is tailored to the findings, and home care is part of the ongoing plan.

Before you decide

A plan that makes
sense for you.

Early gum inflammation and established periodontitis are different conditions. Lost supporting tissue does not automatically return after cleaning, and some sites need more than non-surgical care. Sensitivity or changes in gum appearance can follow treatment. The appropriate plan may involve a periodontist and should explain maintenance, risk factors, and realistic limits for your particular situation.

Can gum disease exist without pain?

Yes. Gum disease may develop with limited discomfort. Bleeding, recession, or a change in tooth support can be clues, but an examination is needed to understand what is happening.

Will a regular cleaning treat it?

The right cleaning depends on the diagnosis. A routine cleaning alone may be insufficient for periodontitis, where affected root surfaces and deeper supporting tissues require a specific treatment plan.

Does treatment grow all the bone back?

Not automatically. The main aim is to control disease and protect the support that remains. Regenerative procedures may be considered for selected defects, but they are not suitable in every case.
